• About Us

Donegal Bay Cycling Club was formed in November 2011 and is an affiliated member of Cycling Ireland, the National Cycling Body. Our club caters to road cyclists, both young and old, those wishing to race or those wishing to take it more leisurely. We organise a range of events to cater to all cyclist’s within the club as well as those from other clubs.

    A brief History

It had been almost twenty years since there had been a Cycling Club in South Donegal but the huge swell of interest in cycling in recent years meant the interest was there to form a new club.

Starting of with just Sunday Spins in 2011, things really progressed over the winter with up to 50 people joining in the various groups each week. We had 90 registered members in our first full year 2012 which was quite phenomenal for a new club. Since then the club has continued to progess and develop. In 2012 the Club decided to organise it’s first competition which was the Club Summer League running each week from May-August. We also received our new club clothing in 2012 of which we have always been very proud, making it much easier to spot our club members out on the bike.

Then in 2013, we added more events including two that were included in the Cycling Ireland calendar, the Donegal Bay Spring Sportive which proved a great success attracting over 200 cyclists and the Donegal Bay Kermesse Race in Mountcharles. 2013 also say the Club participate in the North West Inter-Club league of which we also hosted a Round.  Another new event was the ‘Rounds the Houses’ race in Ballyshannon held in conjuction with the Ballyshannon Folk Festival in August.

The growing interest in Youth Cycling within the club was also starting to manifest itself. A 3 race Youth League was organised in August and one of our Youth members Oisin Doherty won a Bronze medal at the Ulster Youth Championships having barely ever raced beforehand. In just two shorts years, the club was organising almost 20 events per year and winning medals at Provincial level.

In 2014 the club once again organised all the same events with the Youth League expanding out to five events and attracting young athletes from other clubs. The Youth Section really developed during the year with regular Youth Spins and a number of our Youth riders also competing in events throughout Ulster, culminating in a Bronze medal for Oisin Doherty at the National Youth Championships.

The Club has made remarkable progress in just 3 seasons and 2015 will see the club aiming to continue to develop. Two new events will be added to our calendar, the Donegal Bay Youth Classic and the Donegal Bay TT which will also double as the Ulster TT Championship. It will be a great occasion for the club to host a Provincial Championship event and we look forward to welcoming our many visitors.

As well as organising our own events, many of our members participate in the numerous Leisure and Competitive events around Ireland and even further afield. Our Sunday Spins also continue each week with three groups usually taking to the roads, therefore catering for all abilities.
